While condemning the officials of Nigerian prisons for what he described as ‘below average’ performance, the minister ordered with immediate affect, that no official or inmate be allowed access to their telephones, while at the various prisons across the country.
Moro directed further that within next 30days, all telephones must be recovered from the prisoners across the prison formations in the country.
He also decried the indecent
dressing by the inmates, saying, “henceforth, no inmate should be allowed to
wear their choice of clothes or shoes, no matter how highly placed the inmate
may be, as it is the practice presently in some prisons.
In his words: “I have visited
some prisons in other countries as a Minister, Nobody, no matter how highly
placed, is allowed to come to prison with a phone, not even the minister of
Interior or the supervising minister over the prisons. So, why are you an
exception?”
Moro ordered that, “henceforth,
no matter who you are, including myself, nobody goes into the prison with
telephones.
“And so, as
you are going from here, create a meeting platform where all the officers that
work in the prisons as they are going into the prisons they must submit their
phones and collect them when they close.
“Secondly,
it means that you have one month to recover all the phones in the custody of
inmates across the prison formations.
“Within one month, all prison formation must recover all telephones from inmates. Don’t forget that I will know if you fail to do this because we have various agencies in Nigeria that are tracking telephone usage and MTN and other service providers are available to give us information.
“The consequence of not doing this you should already know.”
While speaking on the recent attack on Kotonkarfi prison in Kogi State, Moro said: “A situation whereby it is established that a prison officer connived with external forces to take a sizeable number of AK47 into the prison and the only sanctions you can give to such an officer is to transfer him?, Acting CG, I want you to investigate that matter and report back to me within two weeks.
“A situation where you go to prisons and you find trousers littering the compound… even in police station, immediately you are arrested, you would be denied access to your clothes, except the ones to cover the sensitive parts of the body.”
The minister also warned the officers to “either demonstrate your capacity or honourably resign because there are many Nigerians looking for this job, just say that you are no longer capable of doing this job and get out and we will get committed Nigerians to fill the vacancies, and I mean everything I am saying.”
