A horrific snake bite caused a young girl's leg to shrivel and turn completely black after venom caused severe necrosis – the premature death of cells.
According to Instagram user juventudmedica, as the leg's tissue died, the 13-year-old was treated by remedies from her indigenous culture.
A month after the snake bite, she was transferred to Carcaras in Venezuela for medical treatment.
Being treated with local remedies probably meant she was given antibiotics rather than anti-venom medicines, this will not have been enough to control poisoning.
