Brooklyn police have arrested a man who they say killed his wife's
three-year-old daughter over soiled pants.
The girl's five year-old brother was also assaulted.
Kelsey Smith, 20, was caring for the kids while his newly wed wife Kimberly
Torres was at work at the weekend.
Police were called by someone who reported bloodcurdling screams coming from
a Brooklyn apartment, which is part of a homeless shelter.
They found the girl, Jeida Torres, unconscious and unresponsive on Saturday
afternoon when they entered the apartment. Continue....
Jeida was rushed to a hospital in cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead
there.
Her brother Andrew was in hospital in a stable condition. A neighbour
reported seeing big bruises on his face and arms.
The New York Daily News quoted a police source as saying Smith became
enraged when he discovered that Jeida had soiled her pants, telling her to
"eat it" as he held the garment to her face.
Smith went on the run, but police eventually tracked him down at an aunt's
home in Queens, according to the New York Times.
The newspaper and other reports said he had tried to slit his wrist in an
apparent suicide attempt and was taken to hospital, where he remained under
police custody.
He was charged with assault and acting in a manner injurious to a child less
than 17-years-old.
He has not been charged with murder while a post-mortem determines the exact
cause of Jeida's death.
The charge might then be upgraded to murder.
